Yet in several fast-growing markets, sales are weakening, and inventory is rising. Nevertheless, local households still cannot afford what is available.

That contradiction matters because housing gets treated as one national market even when conditions run in very different directions by region. A single national number can bury what is happening on the ground, leaving buyers and sellers with a story that may not match the market in front of them.
