Trump Extends 90-Day Trade Truce With China; Trump Announces Federal Takeover of Washington Police | NTD Good Morning (Aug. 12)

President Donald Trump has granted a 90-day extension to the United States’ tariff truce with China. Trump wrote that all other elements of the agreement will remain the same. The president also met with Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan on Monday. The sit-down took place just days after Trump called for Tan’s resignation over his alleged ties to Chinese companies with military backgrounds.

Trump has placed the District of Columbia’s Metropolitan Police force under direct federal control as part of a sweeping effort to curb violent crime in the nation’s capital. Trump said he may also deploy active-duty military personnel “if it’s needed.” District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser responded to the news, citing numbers that the crime rate in the district has been coming down. The White House responded with information on a Washington police commander who was suspended last month for allegedly manipulating crime data.

Trump said on Monday that Ukraine and Russia may need to redraw their territorial lines. Trump is due to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday. The president said on Monday that he’ll likely know within the first two minutes of the meeting whether a deal can be reached. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his strong opposition to ceding any territory to Russia.
