Trump Calls for 30-Day Russia–Ukraine Cease-Fire; Pope Leo XIV Elected as First American Pontiff | NTD Good Morning (May 9)
President Donald Trump is calling for a 30-day unconditional cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine. Trump warned on Thursday that Washington and its partners would impose further sanctions if the cease-fire were not respected. Trump says he wants to end the war, but his administration has also warned it may walk away from peace talks if the warring parties do not make headway. Russia has proposed a three-day cease-fire to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the proposal as meaningless and said yesterday that Ukraine is ready for a 30-day cease-fire right now.
The Catholic Church elected a new leader on Thursday. American Cardinal Robert Prevost, a protégé of the late Pope Francis, has taken the name Pope Leo XIV. He was elected as pope on the second day of the Papal Conclave. Prevost was born in Chicago and studied mathematics at Villanova University before being ordained a priest in 1982. Pope Leo XIV is the first pope from the United States in the history of the Catholic Church.
Trump announced his first post-tariff trade deal with the UK on Thursday, which he says will bring in billions of dollars and increase market access for American exports. The agreement will leave in place a 10 percent baseline tariff that Trump imposed on Britain, but the United States will cut its auto tariffs from nearly 30 percent to 10 percent. It will also reduce tariffs on UK steel and aluminum to zero. In return, the UK will expand market access to American beef, ethanol, and other farm products.
