A motion filed on Wednesday by NBA player Terry Rozier’s attorney reveals the NBA had been granted the authority to withhold most of Terry Rozer’s $26.6 million salary over his alleged role in an illegal sports gambling scheme during the 2022–2023 NBA season.
The previous arbitration ruling revealed Rozier’s intent to change the conditions of his case that determine him to be “in breach of his contractual obligation to play.”
Rozier, 32, was arrested in October and charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering, following an FBI investigation that also resulted in the arrest of former NBA player Damon Jones and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups.
“Using private information and positions of power to rig sports gambling outcomes is not only illegal, but destroys the integrity of the game and will never be tolerated,” FBI Director Kash Patel said. “We will continue following the money to ensure gambling operations of all kinds stay within the law and bring to justice those who take advantage of innocent victims.”
The former Miami Heat guard pleaded not guilty to the charges on Dec. 8.
On May 28, Rozier was charged with additional counts of sports bribery and honest services wire fraud conspiracy in a superseding indictment.
“The new indictment just confirms that our motion to dismiss was righteous—new charges, new theories, but all just an effort to make something stick,” said Rozier’s attorney, Jim Trusty, in a statement.
The original prosecution said Rozier, who played for the Charlotte Hornets at the time, planned to exit a March 2023 game early and allegedly told another defendant so that he could place bets according to this knowledge.
Information about this plan was allegedly sold by this defendant later to multiple others. The group allegedly made hundreds of thousands of dollars through their bets on Rozier, who would end up playing nine minutes and 34 seconds in this game, well below his season average of 35.3 minutes per game.
Rozier has made more than $130 million in his NBA career, according to Fanspo data, and most recently made approximately $24.9 million during the 2024–2025 season.
Rozier was drafted by the Boston Celtics in 2015 where he played a key role in multiple deep playoff runs, including being one win away from making the 2018 NBA finals.
He was traded to Charlotte in 2019 and more recently to Miami in the middle of the 2023–2024 season.
Rozier was put on leave by the Heat in October and did not play during the 2025–2026 season. The Heat waived him in April.
