Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony charge, after being arrested for a late-night altercation in Indianapolis that left him hospitalized over the weekend.
During a Monday news conference, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said Sanchez, 38, is facing a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury in addition to his three initial misdemeanor charges.
The felony carries a maximum sentence of between one and six years in prison, and was added after investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) learned the extent of the victim’s injuries.
“One of the challenges you have in a case like this is that you are dealing with individuals who are receiving medical care and that’s, obviously, the most important thing, that individuals are treated appropriately,” Mears told reporters.
“But once we were provided with additional information about the victim’s current medical condition, it became clear to us that additional charges needed to be filed.”
Sanchez is in stable condition after being hospitalized for multiple stab wounds to his upper right torso, sustained during an altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver in a downtown Indianapolis alley.
According to police records, the confrontation took place when Sanchez, who allegedly smelled of alcohol, confronted the individual over a parking spot at a hotel loading dock where he was assigned to work.
In reviewing surveillance footage from the incident, detectives said Sanchez was seen attempting to enter the cab of the victim’s truck, before physically assaulting him by shoving him up against a wall.
The victim proceeded to pepper-spray Sanchez before pulling out a knife to defend himself, said authorities. The truck driver suffered serious injuries, including a laceration to his left cheek.
Sanchez was arrested on Oct. 4 and charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication.
A further investigation into the incident remains ongoing, as police have several outstanding warrants pending.
“The chief and his team continue to work on this matter, continue to track down additional details for us and really supplement that probable cause affidavit,” Mears added.
“I cannot say enough good things about the work that took place at IMPD. There’s a ton of information to sift through and gather.”
Sanchez was slated to appear in court on Oct. 7 for the original charges filed, but is now rescheduled to appear before a judge on Nov. 4.
The Epoch Times reached out to the IMPD and did not hear back by the time of publication.
Sanchez was in Indianapolis to call the Las Vegas Raiders game against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 5, with Fox Sports acknowledging his absence on social media.
“Friday night in Indianapolis, one of our team members, Mark Sanchez, was involved in an incident that, to be honest, we are still trying to wrap our heads around,” Fox commentator Curt Menefee said during the NFL pregame show.
“We are deeply grateful to the medical team for their exceptional care and support,” Fox Sports wrote on X at the time.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time.”
