Federal immigration officers arrested nine illegal immigrants with criminal records in an enforcement operation on Manhattan’s Canal Street on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The immigration operation started just after 4 p.m. as agents targeted street vendors known for selling imitation luxury accessories, watches, scents, electronics, and other items on the iconic street in Chinatown.

A group of protestors disrupted the raid, blocking some federal vehicles, forcing some agents to leave on foot as protestors followed them honking their horns. The agents were helped by reinforcements who arrived in a military vehicle wearing tactical gear.

“Despite violent rioters who assaulted and obstructed law enforcement by blocking vehicles, nine criminal illegal aliens were arrested,” Homeland Security said in a press release on Wednesday.

Some of those detained had prior criminal charges of robbery, burglary, domestic violence, assaulting law enforcement, counterfeiting, drug trafficking, drug possession, and forgery, the agency reported.

Four protesters were also arrested and accused of assaulting law enforcement. Another protester was arrested for obstruction, according to Homeland Security.

The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “conducted a targeted, intelligence-driven enforcement operation on Canal Street in New York City, focused on criminal activity relating to selling counterfeit goods yesterday,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “The majority of those arrested were released into the country by the Biden administration.”

The illegal immigrants arrested were the following:

  • Mamadou Ndoye, from Mali, who was ordered by the courts to be removed from the United States in 2008. He has a lengthy arrest record that includes drug possession and assault.
  • Muhammad Ndiaye, from Senegal. He entered the United States on a B2 tourist visa that expired in 1995. He has a criminal history that includes domestic violence, robbery, drug offenses, and burglary.
  • Aboubakar Diakite. He has a previous arrest for counterfeiting, according to federal agents.
  • Idy Sarr, from Senegal. He was ordered to be removed from the United States in 2010 and has been arrested for counterfeiting and related charges, and drug charges.
