A man wrote on Twitter that he had introduced his co-workers to the “St. Louis secret” to cutting bagels.

Instead of cutting the bagel in half lengthwise, they were “bread sliced,” Alex Krautmann wrote.

The photo shows the bagels sliced like small loaves of bread.

“Today I introduced my coworkers to the St Louis secret of ordering bagels bread sliced. It was a hit!” he wrote in full.

Krautmann’s photo drew controversy and jokes.

“Slicing bagels like bread is a well-known secret in St. Louis,” Sara Burnett, a Panera Bread spokeswoman told Today.com.

She added that people around the United States can order their bagels “St. Louis style.”

Officials in New York City, where the bagel is a staple deli item, posted jokes.
