A person was shot at about 4 p.m. Oct. 8 in New York City during an interaction with federal law enforcement agents, the New York Police Department (NYPD) reported.

The shooting occurred in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx.

“The individual who was shot is at a nearby hospital and is currently conscious and receiving medical attention,” NYPD said in a post on X.

NYPD officers were not involved in the incident and not on scene at the time of the shooting, according to the department.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not immediately respond to a request for information. Demonstrators were holding an anti-ICE protest near the incident Thursday.

The cause of the shooting has not yet been confirmed.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized ICE over the incident, blaming the agency and calling for it to be abolished and removed from the city.

“This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation,” Mamdani said in a post on X. “I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.”
