WASHINGTON—President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Nov. 24 establishing the “Genesis Mission,” a national effort to leverage the federal government’s scientific data to fuel advanced computing and machine learning opportunities for the benefit of Americans.
The plan includes using data sets from the Department of Energy’s National Laboratory and other resources to foster scientific advancements.
“In this pivotal moment, the challenges we face require a historic national effort, comparable in urgency and ambition to the Manhattan Project that was instrumental to our victory in World War II and was a critical basis for the foundation of the Department of Energy and its national laboratories,” the order reads.
Federal scientific data will train artificial intelligence (AI) models to help identify potential improvements and automate processes, according to the order.
“We will harness for the benefit of our nation the revolution underway in computing, and build on decades of innovation in semiconductors and high-performance computing,” the order reads.
“The Genesis Mission will dramatically accelerate scientific discovery, strengthen national security, secure energy dominance, enhance workforce productivity, and multiply the return on taxpayer investment into research and development, thereby furthering America’s technological dominance and global strategic leadership.”
Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, told reporters during a briefing call on Nov. 24 that the mission represents “the largest marshaling of federal scientific resources since the Apollo program.”
He said the use of AI to improve designs will shorten experimentation times “from years to days or even hours, empowering scientists to test hypotheses and discover breakthroughs currently unreachable.”
“America is on the brink of a scientific revolution that will redefine American global scientific supremacy,” said Kratsios, who, according to the order, will serve as general leader of the mission.
One administration official told reporters that improved scientific discoveries could help lower energy prices.
“The ultimate goal of this is to make lives better for American citizens … to bring more energy on, make our electricity grid more efficient, and reverse price rises that have infuriated American citizens,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said during the call.
Wright is tasked with implementing the mission in the Energy Department, including pinpointing 20 national challenges within the next 60 days and identifying computing resources and data sets within 90 and 120 days, respectively.
Over the next eight months, he will review robotics and other capabilities within national laboratories and federal facilities. Within 270 days, Wright is expected to provide at least one use of the new platform to mitigate a challenge identified earlier in the process.
He described the initiative as a pivot toward focusing on engineering and science to unlock technological innovation.
“I think it’s hard to overstate the enthusiasm we have for this moment,” Wright said. “Under President Trump’s leadership, we are going to unlock American ingenuity.”
