A suburban brawl involving around 30 men during a celebrating to mark the end of the Muslim festival of Ramadan has resulted in three people being injured and taken to hospital.
Video of the fight has circulated online showing a number of men attending a home in Marks St, Merrylands in western Sydney.
In the video, numerous men can be seen screaming and acting agitated, with nearby witnesses claiming punches were thrown.
In a statement provided to The Epoch Times, New South Wales Police confirmed three men were taken to hospital around 1.30 p.m. on March 22.
“A 22-year-old man suffered two stab wounds to his back while two men, aged 57 and 61, suffered facial injuries,” a police spokesperson said.
“All were taken to hospital for further treatment.
“None of the injuries are reported to be life-threatening.”
Officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command were informed of the brawl outside the suburban home, with multiple men brandishing weapons like knives, batons, poles and a shovel.
“Numerous calls to Triple Zero (000) were received, however, most men fled the scene on police arrival,” police said.
“A crime scene was established and inquiries are underway.
“It’s believed all are known to each other.”
The incident comes amid broader scrutiny of assimilation and Australia’s migration policy.
Just last week, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was heckled with chants of “Allahu Akbar” directed at him during an Eid visit to the country’s biggest mosque in the western Sydney suburb of Lakemba.
In video posted online, other phrases like “genocide supporter,” “he’s got to respect us,” and “get them out of there” can be seen shouted at the ministers as they were ushered out of the building.
Social cohesion and tensions linked to overseas conflicts have lifted since the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel and the Gaza War, leading to a spike in anti-Semitic attacks locally, as well as broader support for pro-Palestine causes.
This culminated in the Bondi Beach terror attacks targeting a Jewish celebration that killed 15 people and injured 40.
The federal government has attempted to bridge support for the Jewish community and placate the large Muslim population in Sydney’s west where Labor holds several seats.
This has included a mix of initiatives including recognition of the Palestinian state, barring Israeli ministers and public figures from entering the country, pledging further action against Islamaphobia.
New NSW Crime Statistics Released
Meanwhile, the latest round of statistics released by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) shows crime across the state has remained either stable or decreased in most categories.
Shoplifting offences remain higher, however, alongside sexual assaults which rose by 7.9 percent across the state.
BOSCAR Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald said willingness to report sexual assaults had also risen which she believed influenced the statistic.
Of the 13 major crime categories, eight were stable over the past two years to Dec. 2025 and three declined significantly.
Adult court appearances were up, however, something BOSCAR attributes to an increase in domestic violence incidents.
“The growing number of domestic violence charges reflects both an increase in domestic violence offences recorded by police and a higher likelihood of charges being laid when these matters come to police attention,” she said.
