Conservative MP Morin Says Liberals Are Trying to ‘Poach’ Him

Conservative MP Billy Morin says the Liberal government has been trying to get him to cross the floor and join their party, but he does not intend to do so.

Speaking on a hot mic prior to a press conference on Parliament Hill on April 13, Morin asked reporters if they wanted to “run a story on floor crossing.” When asked if he would be the next MP to cross the floor, he replied, “No, they’re trying to poach me.” When a reporter noted that he was saying this in a room full of reporters, Morin replied, “Yeah, is that a surprise?”

In a post the same day on social media, Morin said he is “proud to be a part of a Strong Opposition – something Canadians are owed.” Morin said he would stand by his constituents and not be part of a “shameless Liberal power grab that degrades democracy.”

Morin, who served as the chief of Enoch Cree Nation from 2015 to 2022, was elected as MP for Edmonton Northwest in the 2025 federal election. Morin won 54.3 percent of the vote in the riding, compared to 38.2 percent for the Liberal candidate.

Morin’s office did not respond to The Epoch Times’ request for comment before press time.

Morin’s comments come days after a fourth Conservative MP crossed the floor to join the Liberal Party. Marilyn Gladu, who had been a Tory MP since 2015, announced on April 8 that she was joining the Liberals, saying her constituents wanted “serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy.”

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre reacted to Gladu’s floor crossing on social media by saying Prime Minister Mark Carney was “seizing a costly Liberal majority that voters denied him” by making “backroom deals.” Poilievre said Gladu’s constituents had voted for a Conservative vision for Canada and not the one offered by the Liberal government.

In addition to Gladu, three other Conservative MPs and one New Democrat MP have crossed the floor to the Liberal Party in the last five months. Tory MP Chris d’Entremont joined the Liberals on Nov. 4, 2025, followed by fellow Conservative MPs Michael Ma on Dec. 11, 2025, and Matt Jeneroux on Feb. 18. NDP MP Lori Idlout announced her decision to cross the floor on March 10.

The Liberal Party is currently just one seat away from a majority government, but three byelections being held on April 13 are almost certain to put them over the top. Polling aggregator 338Canada indicates the Liberal candidates are favoured to win in former Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland’s former riding of University-Rosedale and former Liberal MP Bill Blair’s riding of Scarborough Southwest, while the Bloc Québécois and Liberals are tied in the Quebec riding of Terrebonne.

In January, Conservative MP Amarjeet Jill announced he had “firmly” rejected an offer to join the Liberal Party, saying he would “always honour the trust my constituents of Brampton West have placed in me.” Tory MP Scott Anderson also said that month that it would be a “betrayal” of his constituents if he were to cross the floor.
