A large-scale overnight Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv killed 15 people, including four children, the head of the city’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, said on Aug. 28.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing in the Darnytskyi district,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a post on X that the attack was a “horrific and deliberate killing of civilians.”
“The Russians are not choosing to end the war, only new strikes,” he wrote. “Overnight in Kyiv, dozens of buildings were damaged: residential houses, office centers, civilian enterprises.”
The office of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine was also hit in the attack. European Council President Antonio Costa posted an image of a damaged office space on X.
“Horrified by yet another night of deadly Russian missile attacks on Ukraine,” Costa wrote in a post accompanying the photo.
“My thoughts are with the Ukrainian victims and also with the staff of @EUDelegationUA, whose building was damaged in this deliberate Russian strike. The EU will not be intimidated. Russia’s aggression only strengthens our resolve to stand with Ukraine and its people.”
EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, echoed Costa’s sentiments and called for Russia to come to the negotiating table.
Zelenskyy called for fresh sanctions against Moscow, accusing the Kremlin of “spurning” cease-fire efforts and attempting to “weasel out of negotiations.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that along with the EU delegation building, the offices of the British Council in the Ukrainian capital were also damaged.
Ukraine’s air force said in a post on Telegram that it downed 563 Shahed-type drones and 26 missiles during the attack.
It also noted hits on 13 locations and debris falling in 26.
Moscow, which denies targeting civilians, has increased its aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months.
