Severe Storms Sweep Ontario, Bringing Flooding, Power Outages to Toronto Area

A heavy thunderstorm in the Toronto area has led to flooding and damages to buildings, with many vehicles stranded and residents left without power.

Environment Canada issued an alert on Sept. 2 afternoon warning of torrential rain and large hail in southern Ontario, urging residents to take cover in a basement or interior room if they’re in affected areas. The agency lifted its alerts for the Toronto area later on Sept. 2, while alerts remained in place for parts of southern Ontario.

Road closures were still in effect late on Sept. 2, including on the Don Valley Parkway, one of the city’s main arteries, while public transportation services were also disrupted.

Several vehicles were submerged in the floods on the city streets, while buildings were damaged by falling trees and debris.

Toronto Hydro said approximately 65,000 customers remain without power as of Sept. 2 evening. The company urged the public to stay away from downed power lines.

“We are responding to reported hazards, including downed powerlines and damaged electrical equipment, while coordinating restoration efforts across the city,” the company said in a social media post.

The weather also affected flights out of Toronto’s Pearson Airport, with many flights delayed, and some cancelled. The airport urged passengers to check their flight status with their airline before going to the airport.
