Australia is one step closer to having a United States ambassador stationed in Canberra after President Donald Trump’s nominee, former Virginia congressman David Brat, was backed by a U.S. Senate committee.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed Brat’s nomination, sending it to the full Senate for a final vote.

Brat was nominated by Trump in April and appeared before the committee last month, where he outlined priorities for the Australia-United States relationship, including strengthening defence cooperation, expanding collaboration on critical minerals, and supporting engagement in the Indo-Pacific.

If confirmed, he would take up the role in Canberra, filling a post that has remained vacant since President Trump’s return to office.

Brat represented Virginia’s seventh congressional district from 2014 to 2019 after defeating House Majority Leader Eric Cantor.

He currently serves as senior vice president of business relations at Liberty University, where he focuses on external relationships and executive-level events.

His role involves international travel, engagement with global business and political figures, and participating in high-level speaking engagements including Liberty University’s annual CEO Summit.

Brat also led one of the largest business schools in the United States as dean, where he oversaw over 20,000 students and over 250 academic programs.

Australia and the U.S. maintain a close partnership through alliances including ANZUS and AUKUS.

The date has not yet been announced for a full Senate confirmation vote.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would work with whoever is appointed, noting it is a matter for the United States.

“I’ll work with whoever is determined to be the ambassador,” Albanese told reporters.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor also acknowledged the nomination as a positive step in the bilateral relationship.

“I welcome U.S. President Donald Trump’s nomination of former congressman, David Brat, to serve as America’s next ambassador to Australia,” he said on X.
