Bank VP Says Shen Yun Portrays a Gentle and Righteous People

DETROIT—”It felt the show did the country justice. It did truly show the history of China of many, many years and many, many cultures. And many, many dynasties,” said Glen Hall, vice president of investments of United Bank of Switzerland (UBS) financial services, after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Mr. Hall caught the essence of Shen Yun’s mission: to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired culture through traditional music and dance.

Mr. Hall saw New York-based Shen Yun at the Detroit Opera House on Jan. 27. “As an entertainment, it was beautiful. It was very artistic,” he said.

He was also struck by the overall gentleness of the Chinese culture portrayed through the performance: “I liked the colors of the outfits, the gentleness that it was portraying. The softness of the dancers, … It just kind of portrayed the softness of the historic China.”

“It seemed to be portrayed as a gentle nature and very righteous. Very rewarding … not with anything but good feelings for people,” he said.

Mr. Hall enjoyed the digitally animated backdrops that bring the set and performers into interaction. He felt that interaction was very unique and well put together.

He also enjoyed the music. The Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Orchestra combines both Eastern instruments and Western, in a very distinctive but lush sound.

“The sound was wonderful and very calming, very relaxing,” he said.

At the heart of Shen Yun is classical Chinese dance. Alongside of ballet, classical Chinese dance is one of the most comprehensive and rigorously demanding dance systems, according to the company’s website.

“I have a 5-year-old daughter that I’m sure would have loved it. She loves ballet, and dance, and it’s a very unique dance and I felt like she will come next time we attend,” he said.

“I would like my daughter to see it when she gets to the point where she’ll be able to join. I think she would just love the whole nature of the show,” he said.
