NEW YORK— A Bronx bakery and a cardboard box manufacturer have been cited for 24 violations of workplace safety and health standards by the U.S. Department of Labor.
Color Carton Corp., a cardboard box manufacturer in the Bronx, 341 Canal Place, faces possible penalties of up to $62,000.
The violations include inadequate fall protection, a lack of machine guarding, a blocked exit, not having an energy control program, a lack of overhead crane inspections, platforms with inadequate guardrail systems, a stairway without a handrail, a stairway that was too steep, a forklift missing a cover, unmarked circuit breakers, a worn power cord on a compressor, and other electrical hazards such as exposed live parts.
The company also did not provide eyewash stations for workers who are exposed to corrosive materials, communication programs for workers exposed to dangerous chemicals, or programs to protect workers from excessive noise.
“Left uncorrected, these hazards expose workers to possible lacerations, amputations, electric shocks, fires, explosions, eye injuries, and being unable to exit the workplace swiftly in the event of an emergency,” said Diana Cortez, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)’s area director in Tarrytown, N.Y.
Zaro Bake Shop Inc., a commercial bakery in the Bronx, has also been cited for 26 serious violations of workplace standards. OSHA initiated inspections in April after a complaint and is now proposing $118,000 in fines.
Color Carton Corp. and Zaro Bake Shop Inc. have 15 business days to either comply and meet informally with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings.
