Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush—as well as former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney—responded to Donald Trump’s victory.
Trump said several members of the Bush family phoned him.
“Jeb Bush, George W and George H.W. all called to express their best wishes on the win. Very nice!” he wrote. Trump defeated Jeb Bush, a former Florida governor, after repeatedly deriding him as “low energy” on Twitter and in debates.
“Mitt Romney called to congratulate me on the win. Very nice!” he tweeted. Romney was among several top-level Republicans who were trying to start a third-party bid for presidency after denouncing Trump’s rhetoric during the campaign.
“Governor John Kasich of the GREAT, GREAT, GREAT State of Ohio called to congratulate me on the win. The people of Ohio were incredible!” Trump later wrote.
None of the officials Trump tweeted about reportedly voted for him, campaigned for him, or endorsed him during the campaign.
