It was as if Hurricane Sandy never existed. That was the impression on Coney Island on March 24. The boardwalk was intact and echoed the large crowds’ frequent footsteps. Luna Park opened on schedule and was filled with children’s laughter and roller coaster riders’ screams.

For those who witnessed the devastating damage Coney Island suffered after Hurricane Sandy in October last year, Sunday was almost an unbelievable sight. Everything had come back to life on that little piece of Brooklyn. For those who haven’t, it would have been impossible to imagine the extent of the area’s recovery.

It’s the beginning of Coney Island’s gradual renewal, with things coming back to normal one by one. That’s how it seemed with the people going back and fro in the park, long waiting lines at Nathan’s Famous Hotdogs, and kite flying on the beach.
