Double Rainbow Spotted in New York and New Jersey After Rainstorm Sunday

Double rainbows were seen across the state of New York on Sunday, and residents took the opportunity to snap pictures of the rare phenomenon.

Rainbows occur when sunlight refracts into different colors at the back of a raindrops. Occasionally a secondary, less visible rainbow will appear when the light is reflected twice.

The color sequence of the lesser rainbow is a reversal of the primary rainbow, with blue on the outside and red on the inside instead of vice-versa.
