Google Inc.’s new Chromebook laptop is now available for purchase at 100 Best Buys stores across the United States and at Dixons in the United Kingdom, the search giant announced at its annual I/O developer conference in San Francisco on Thursday.
The current Chromebooks are three times faster than the previous generation. Google said it is working with Intel and other hardware partners on developing the next generation Chromebooks that will be released by Christmas.
Last month, Samsung announced the release of a new Chromebook and desktop computer Chromebox, both of which coincide with Google’s updates to Chrome OS.
Google gave all attendees at the conference a new Chromebox.
Meanwhile, Google also made Google Drive available for iOS and Chrome OS, rounding out its cloud-syncing service for the already supported Windows, Mac OS X, and Android. The development will allow collaborative real-time editing across desktop, phone, and tablet. On the Google Apps side, the company said it has built offline editing for Google Docs, available as of Thursday.
The second part of Thursday’s I/O keynote focused on Google’s infrastructure. Urs Hölzle, senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said Google App Engine now has one million active apps and gets 7.5 billion hits per day.
Hölzle then introduced the Google Compute Engine, a competitor to Amazon Web Services for cloud-based virtual machines. It is an infrastructure-as-a-service that offers Linux virtual machines with multiple storage options, connectivity offers, and clustering options.
