NEW YORK—Temperatures are set to potentially exceed 100 F Thursday. To deal with the heat, cooling centers, basically air-conditioned buildings open to the public, are going to be available across the city through Thursday evening.

While New Yorkers are encouraged by city officials to utilize their own air conditioners, places such as senior centers, Salvation Army community centers, libraries, malls, museums, or one of the 455 cooling centers provide other options for getting out of the heat.

Besides being mindful of personal health, checking in on “vulnerable neighbors” would be common sense, according to a release from the Office of Emergency Management Commissioner Joseph F. Bruno.

Bruno added, “To ensure that every New Yorker has a place to stay cool, the city has opened more than 450 cooling centers—public places that are open to anyone who needs a place to take a break from the heat and cool off.”
