Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte to Compete in 400 IM

In their vying for spots on the U.S. Olympic team, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte—the top two male swimmers in the world—are both through to Monday evening’s final in the 400 individual medley.

In his opening swim earlier Monday, Lochte finished with a 4:10.66, the fastest of the day and about four seconds faster than Phelps.

The 25-year-old Phelps rose to international fame after winning six gold and two bronze medals in Athens in 2004 and eight gold medals at Beijing in 2008. The 27-year-old Lochte garnered three gold, two silver, and one bronze at the Olympics.
