Fueled by land over-development as well as local officials’ control measures, the economy of southern China’s Pearl River Delta Region has been under duress. By the end of 2010, the Guangdong Provincial Government accrued a debt of around 589 billion yuan ($92.8 billion). Several townships in Dongguan City, famed for its booming manufacturing industry, have declared bankruptcy in recent years.

Photos uploaded by users on the popular Sina Weibo microblogging site show what is purportedly dozens of labor strikes Aug. 27 and Aug. 29, with many participants demanding that factories and companies pay them overdue wages.
