Robbinsville, N.J., officials said the district’s school superintendent, Steve Mayer, was struck and killed by a car driven by a 17-year-old student on April 19 while Mayer was jogging.

Lt. Chris Nitti said in a press conference that the student was driving south. The superintendent’s dog was also killed. Authorities said the place where the incident happened is a dangerous road. Nitti said no summonses or charges have been issued, and that the incident is still under investigation. School Board President Matthew O’Grady said the assistant superintendent, Kathy Foster, will take over Mayer’s position until a meeting takes place.

New Jersey Robbinsville School Superintendent Steve Mayer died after getting hit by a car while going for a run on April 19.

The incident happened when Mayer was jogging at about 6:15 a.m. near Robbinsville-Edinburg Road near Robbinsville High School, says NJ.com.

“With a heavy heart, we share with you devastating news that our beloved Dr. Steven Mayer, Superintendent of Schools passed away this morning from a tragic accident,” said school district officials in a statement.

“As a community, we ask that you keep the Mayer Family in your thoughts and prayers,” they added.

All schools in the Robbinsville district have been closed for April 19.

The incident is under investigation. There is no word on the driver that struck Mayer. School officials and authorities have scheduled a press conference about the incident at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

School officials said crisis counseling will be available at Robbinsville High School in the afternoon.

People who knew Mayer went on social media to express their grief and share messages of support to his family.
