AUSTIN, Texas—Shen Yun Performing Arts played its last of three shows in Austin on Friday night to an enthusiastic audience at The Long Center.
“I love it. Absolutely mind-blowing. Everything was just beautiful, absolutely breathtaking,” said Ms. Cassandra Bradford, a lymphatic therapist. Ms. Bradford attended the show with Mr. Steve Harrington, a business owner and entrepreneur, who said he agreed and was very much looking forward to the continuation of the show after the intermission.
“[I’m] very impressed with the experience. And for someone who has no experience with Chinese culture, it was great,” Mr. Harrington said.
The New York-based company’s mission to revive 5,000 years of Chinese history was presented on stage with traditional Chinese arts and values through mediums such as classical Chinese dance and bel canto song.
“I loved the women dancers,” Ms. Bradford said. “I thought the [dancers] were beautiful, very talented, very demure.”
Mr. Harrington echoed the sentiment, saying that the dancers were “very talented, very capable, [and] well trained,” noting that the structure of classical Chinese dance was unique.
The choreography of the show was “very impressive” and the pieces incorporated “stunning costumes,” he said.
Many of the dances Shen Yun performed told of stories that ranged from ancient legends to current events in China.
“The stories are a great way to show the passage through history, the [Chinese] culture through history,” Mr. Harrington said.
Because traditional Chinese culture is believed to be divinely inspired, nearly all the stories had a touch of magic or theme of spirituality and the battle between good and evil.
“I look at it as a deeper path of joy and truth,” Ms. Bradford said of the spiritual aspect of many pieces. The theme of truth was well pronounced in the solo vocalists’ songs, which Ms. Bradford said were “breathtaking.”
“I loved the tenor. The first tenor [Tian Ge] just blew my mind. I loved them both [Tian Ge and Hsu Chia Ning]. They’re so talented,” she said.
Ms. Bradford said she had seen an advertisement for Shen Yun and “it was just so dreamy, I had to see it,” and had wanted a taste of a different culture and found that Shen Yun was “absolutely more” than she could have hoped for.
