Lionel Richie Hospitalized Following Concert in St. Louis

Grammy Award-winning artist Lionel Richie was hospitalized in St. Louis after experiencing potential health issues toward the end of a performance over the weekend.

Richie, 77, was performing at The Muny on Aug. 29, as part of his ongoing “Sing a Song All Night Long” tour with Earth, Wind & Fire.

According to TMZ, the musician checked himself into a hospital after the show for medical tests and was subsequently placed in the intensive care unit for further observation.

Doctors pointed to possible mild dehydration as the cause, the outlet reported. However, as of Monday, his representatives had not issued a public statement regarding his condition.

Richie will continue being monitored as a precaution, with hopes that he might be able to leave the hospital as early as Tuesday, according to the publication.

TMZ reported that during the St. Louis performance, concertgoers noticed that Richie appeared to be struggling physically near the conclusion of the show.

He asked members of his team to bring him a chair while performing “All Night Long,” allowing him to finish the song while seated.

The Epoch Times reached out to representatives for Richie for further information on the matter, but did not hear back by publication time. Richie is slated to perform in San Francisco on Sept. 26, as his tour continues.

Richie’s hospitalization comes two months after a separate health incident that occurred while he was on tour. In June, the singer cut his opening night concert short after feeling dizzy during a Minnesota performance.

Richie appeared to become unwell before taking a seat during a performance of “Dancing on the Ceiling” at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul on June 24.

He attempted to continue his performance, later moving to the piano for another song before an unscheduled break was announced.

“What I have learned about my years of being in the business, when you are feeling dizzy, sit yo [expletive] down,” he told concert goers in a video from the event. “When you are feeling strange about yourself, sit yo [expletive] down.”

“Now, I want you to know that’s the first time in the history of ‘Dancing on the Ceiling’ I’ve done it sitting down,” he continued. “That’s a bad sign, that’s a bad sign, y’all.”

After an extended intermission, a member of Richie’s touring band informed the audience that the singer would not be returning to the stage, thanking fans for their “patience and understanding,” before wishing everyone “safe travels home.”

At the time, Richie was evaluated backstage by paramedics before being transported to a hospital for precautionary measures. He later reassured fans on July 4, that he was “doing well,” before expressing gratitude for every message of support.
