The FBI says it has arrested four individuals on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the weekend shooting in Mississippi that left six people dead and 16 injured.
The announcement came after an FBI office in Mississippi sought the public’s help in identifying several potential suspects and persons of interest who were seen near the attack.
In a Sunday statement on X, the FBI’s Jackson Field Office said that it needed the help of the public “in support of the investigation into the mass shooting that occurred” in Leland on Saturday.
The post included photos of one female and three males who were seen in surveillance video footage. The FBI did not provide other details about the individuals sought in the footage.
Authorities did not disclose a possible motive for the shooting, but the FBI said in a statement that gunfire appears to have been “sparked by a disagreement among several individuals” and remains under investigation.
A spokesperson for the FBI’s Jackson Field Office on Monday identified the suspects in custody as Teviyon L. Powell, 29, William Bryant, 29, and Morgan Lattimore, 25, who have been charged with capital murder, and Latoya A. Powell, 44, who has been charged with attempted murder.
The sheriff’s office in Sharkey County said in a statement that it arrested and charged two individuals apparently in connection with the shooting in Leland, saying that it occurred near a local school football game.
“Sheriff [Herbert] Ceaser want[s] to make it absolutely clear that acts of violence in our community will not be tolerated,” the Sharkey County Sheriff’s Department said in the statement. “Our team of law enforcement officers are committed to pursuing justice swiftly and ensuring the safety of all residents and visitors that come to our county.”
Mississippi state Sen. Derrick Simmons, who represents people in that region, told The Associated Press that before the incident, “people were just congregating and having a good time in the downtown of Leland.” He was told that after the gunfire, the scene was “very chaotic,” as police, sheriff’s deputies, and ambulances “responded from all over.”
