The wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Baird (R-Ind.) has passed away due to complications from injuries she sustained in a car accident earlier this year, the Indiana Republican’s office announced Sunday.

Danise Baird died after the accident, in which the congressman was also involved, according to a statement from his office.

“The Office of Congressman Jim Baird is saddened to announce the passing of his beloved wife, Danise, following complications from injuries sustained in a car accident earlier this year,” the statement read. “Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service. A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”

Baird expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and reflected on what his wife meant to him.

“I want to thank everyone for the kind condolences and messages of support. The loss is profound, but your prayers and love have meant more than I can express,” he wrote in a post on X. “After 59 years of marriage, Danise was my closest confidant and lifelong partner in every sense. She believed deeply in the responsibility of serving the Fourth District by my side and never wavered in her support of that calling.”

Baird pledged to persist in his role despite the personal tragedy.

“I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution, and that responsibility remains,” he said. “While I continue to grieve, I will carry on the work she cared so much about, strengthened by the support of our family and an exceptional staff. My office remains open to serve and support constituents.”

Colleagues of his extended sympathies through social media platforms.

“Very sorry to hear this @RepJimBaird,” Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) posted.

“My deepest condolences to Jim and his family. Danise was a bright spirit with a kind heart. She will be missed,” Rep. Victoria Spartz (R-Ind,) said.

Other messages included prayers.

“I’m so sorry, Jim! I remember how sweet your wife was to my daughter when we traveled together,” Rep. Beth Van Duyne (R-Texas) wrote. “She will be missed.”

His colleagues from across the aisle also weighed in.

“Sorry for you [sic] loss,” Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) wrote.

Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) wrote, “I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of Danise Baird. I’m praying for Rep. Baird and the entire family as they navigate this incredibly difficult time.”

The accident took place early on Jan. 5, when Baird’s vehicle was struck by an unidentified driver while en route to the Capitol in Washington. The driver fled the scene and has yet to be identified despite police investigations.

A Jan. 6 update from his office detailed the congressman’s recovery. At the time, he was hospitalized but expected to make a full recovery. He had suffered minor injuries including road rash and bruising, while Danise suffered multiple fractures and had to be sent to the ICU.

“Congressman Baird is in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, and he is extraordinarily grateful for everyone’s prayers during this time,” the earlier statement said.

Baird, 80, entered Congress in 2019. He has focused on agriculture, veterans’ issues, and conservative priorities.
