Paul Pelosi, husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), faces a misdemeanor hit-and-run charge after allegedly striking a parked car in California on July 3.
According to a statement shared by the Napa County Sheriff’s Office on July 4, deputies determined Pelosi was driving a car that struck another vehicle that was legally parked on the shoulder of a roadway. The parked vehicle sustained major damage.
No injuries were reported.
Deputies responding to a call about the incident found Pelosi about a quarter mile away from the other vehicle with damage to the front of his own car. The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said Pelosi acknowledged he hit something but did not know what or when, and had continued driving.
Pelosi, 86, did not test positive for any alcohol in his system, authorities said.
Deputies did not arrest Pelosi but recommended a misdemeanor charge for leaving the scene of an accident, as there were no injuries. The sheriff’s office recommended the lawmaker’s husband to California’s Department of Motor Vehicles to determine whether he should be allowed to continue driving—a referral process that is common for older drivers.
In August 2022, Pelosi pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge for driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury in a May 2022 incident. He was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation, and to pay $5,000 in restitution for the victim’s medical bills and $2,000 in additional fines.
The terms of Pelosi’s probation also required him to attend a three-month driving class and have an ignition interlock device or breathalyzer installed on his vehicle.
In a separate incident, Pelosi was injured in October 2022, after a suspect broke into the couple’s San Francisco home and struck him with a hammer. He underwent surgery for a skull fracture he sustained in the attack.
