Australia’s population has officially surpassed 28 million, with the national population clock ticking over the milestone in the early hours of June 2.

The figure is based on the estimated resident population as of July 1, 2025, combined with ongoing projections for births, deaths and migration.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the population increases by one person every minute and 15 seconds.

It also calculates one birth every two minutes and 16 seconds, and one death every three minutes and 33 seconds.

There is one new arrival into the country every 59 seconds, and one resident departing every two minutes and 35 seconds.

Despite reaching the 28 million milestone, population growth is expected to moderate in the coming years.

In an earlier March statement, ABS head of demography Phil Browning said natural births and migration were the major contributors.

In that month’s data there was a natural increase of 112,600 people and 311,000 net migration.

Western Australia recorded the strongest population growth of any state.

“Western Australia was the fastest growing state, with a population rise of 2.2 percent,” said Browning. “Victoria and Queensland grew by 1.7 percent.”

Tasmania recorded the slowest growth, with its population rising by just 0.3 percent over a 12-month period.

Australia’s growing population, driven largely by overseas migration, remains at the centre of a heated political debate as concerns persist over housing affordability, infrastructure, and pressure on public services.

The issue has gained fresh attention after the federal budget revised migration forecasts upward with 1 million individuals expected by 2028.
