Seven men have been arrested in the western Sydney suburb of Liverpool amid dramatic scenes that unfolded near a busy shopping mall.
Just before 5 p.m., the New South Wales (NSW) Police Force announced a “police operation” was underway at the corner of George and Campbell Streets, close to the Westfield mall.
A police spokesperson told The Epoch Times there was no longer any ongoing risk to the community.
Widely shared footage from the scene shows tactical officers in long, camouflage gear pinning a number of men to the ground.
A heavily damaged white Hyundai hatchback with Victorian car plates was also noted at the scene.
The car front windscreen appeared to be damaged by several small holes.
In another footage, one man was also seen with a bloodied head as he was treated by paramedics.
In a later statement, the NSW Police Force confirmed they were responding to a possible violent act.
“Tactical Operations police responded to information received that a violent act was possibly being planned,” the agency said.
“Police subsequently intercepted two cars as part of the investigation.”
Police said the seven men were currently assisting them with inquiries.
“At this point in time, police have not identified any connection to the current police investigation of the Bondi terror attack,” the statement said.
NSW Police also urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
The incident comes as the investigation into the Bondi terrorist attack continues, with alleged mass shooter hit with 59 charges including 15 counts of murder.
NSW Police having reopened parts of the Bondi Beach precinct to the public.
In response, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has promised tougher security measures to address anti-Semitism and hate speech in the country.
Among the proposed policies were new criminal offences, new visa cancellation powers, more online regulation, education reform, and the activation of the national disaster recovery funding.
