NEW YORK—A grisly car crash that turned a black SUV into a pile of scrap metal killed five people early Sunday morning near the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens, according to news reports.

Three adult females and two children, an 8-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy, were killed, according to NY1. Residents told NY1 that cars often speed on Atlantic Avenue, just off the expressway, and sources said speed may have been a factor in this crash.

“Especially at night, when it’s empty,” one resident told the media agency. “They zoom through here and you hear the tires squealing from inside the house.”

The vehicle, carrying eight people, flipped and rolled over after hitting a concrete pillar around 3:15 a.m., before bursting into flames.

The SUV’s three other occupants—a 45-year-old woman (the driver), a 26-year-old male, and a 7-year-old boy—are in stable condition at Jamaica Hospital, according to The Associated Press.
