Skywatchers got a glimpse of what’s on the cards for next year’s solar maximum when a coronal mass ejection (CME) erupted on the sun in mid-July.

The CME struck Earth’s magnetic field, triggering an intense and prolonged display of auroras around the world.

When the solar maximum arrives in 2013, the sun will reach the peak of its 11-year sunspot cycle with an abundance of flares, CMEs, geomagnetic storms, and auroras.

This NASA video explains the event and what’s still to come.
