Former NASCAR driver Richard “Dick” Trickle died in an apparent suicide.

Trickle, who spent 24 years racing in NASCAR, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Boger City, North Carolina, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

“The Lincoln County Communications Center received a call apparently from the victim that ‘there would be a dead body and it would be his,’” the release said.

It added: “Communications Center workers tried to place a return call to the number but did not get an answer.”

Emergency responders found the body lying near his pickup truck.

Trickle took part in 303 races during his NASCAR career, according to CLNS Radio. His average career finish was 24.21.
