NEW YORK—Hundreds of passengers were evacuated from a busy terminal at JFK Airport Saturday morning, after staff found a metal detector had malfunctioned and people had not been screened properly.

Terminal 7 was reopened at 11:45 a.m., after about two hours, according to a statement from the Transportation Security Administration. Hundreds of passengers who had been evacuated were put through security for a second time in accordance with airport protocol.

The “malfunction” was a metal detector out of batteries, according to the New York Post, quoting a law-enforcement source. Eight to 10 flights were delayed because of the error.

One passenger headed to Hawaii complained to the Post about the delay, while another, Jason Bailey, headed to San Diego, said, “It’s a big inconvenience, but it’s better safe than sorry.”
