Topshop deserves the credit for the name, after the British fashion retailer created jeggings a year ago. At the time they were viewed as an oddity but have since taken off, with big companies like Gap and Ralph Lauren producing them in childrens' sizes, and even for newborn to three-month-old babies.
The jean-legging hybrids are knitted using cotton, polyester, and spandex, according to New York Fashion. They are different from skinny jeans as they stretch and are more comfortable.
The word "jeggings" is now on a waiting list to be added to the Oxford English Dictionary, according to ABC News.
