Giving another go at a market that has been dominated by Android Browser and Opera Mini, Mozilla introduced a new Firefox application for Android ready for download in the Google Play store on Tuesday.
“The new Firefox for Android is a snappy and dynamic upgrade to mobile browsing that makes it faster and easier to get where you want to go on the Web,” Mozilla said in a statement.
Mozilla said the new Firefox for Android is “significantly” faster than the stock browser that ships on Android phones. While the default Android browser performs at 12 frames per second and the previous version of Firefox for Android can go as fast as 13.2 frames, the new Firefox for Android could speed up to 39.3 frames per second.
Opera browser is next in line with 21.6 frames, followed by Google Chrome for Android at 19.6 frames and Dolphin browser at 14.1 frames.
Apple Inc.’s Safari captures the largest mobile and tablet browser share at 63.2 percent, followed by 19.2 percent using Android Browser and 12.4 percent using Opera Mini.
