Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq announces new licensing rules to address prescription drug abuse on Nov.19. The move aims to curb abuse of highly addictive oxycodone products by imposing new conditions on the licences of dealers who manufacture and distribute products that contain the drug. If evidence of abuse is uncovered, dealers can be held responsible, including having their licence revoked for certain medications. In a letter, Aglukkaq also called on provinces, territories, and medical professionals to take action within their jurisdictions to address prescription drug abuse. However, she has drawn flak over her refusal to ban a generic version of oxycodone from entering the Canadian market. Abuse of the drug is considered to be epidemic in some First Nations communities.
