NEW YORK—Parents interested in sending their children to the NYPD’s Summer Youth Police Academy can submit applications through June 22.

During the six-week program, “your child will learn discipline and self-confidence, while receiving lectures on topics including gang awareness and Internet safety,” according to a NYPD Community Affairs Bureau officer in an online video. Members of different units, such as the evidence collection team and the special operations team, will drop in as guest speakers.

Field trips in past years have included cleaning up Gateway Beach on Staten Island and bowling. Field trips have not been decided yet for this year’s program, said a staff member. Activities include calisthenics, military drills, free play, talent shows, and sports.

Open to youth currently in school, ages 10 to 16, the program runs five days a week from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with sites throughout the five boroughs, including 420 E. 12th St., in Manhattan, Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn, and New Dorp High School in Staten Island.

Applications, available at http://ept.ms/MqcXcg, must be printed out and mailed through the United States Postal Service.
