TAOYUAN, Taiwan—Ming-Hui Chen, president of the Taoyuan Architects Association, and his wife attended the March 28 performance of Shen Yun Performing Arts in Taoyuan. “Shen Yun is very excellent—a masterful production,” Mr Chen said.

“Today’s Shen Yun performance, the whole process of it, depicts some of ancient Chinese history and also modern history,” he added. “For instance, the persecution taking place in China.

“The overall performance, in my opinion, is of great value,” he said. “In particular, the depiction of each dynasty is of great artistic value, with the costumes and the music blending in with the backdrop scenes that correspond to each different dynasty.”

Mr. Chen was equally impressed with the music. “The music is marvelous—a masterful production and performance, and also a delight to ears,” he said. “I think the performance is remarkable, of great artistic value.”

One performance in particular stood out to Mr. Chen. “The Emperor Journeys to the Moon is a story about a drunk emperor who flies to the moon with the Moon goddess in his dream,” he said. “I consider this journey an act of an artist.”

Mr. Chen also said that a performance of Shen Yun’s caliber requires much more that just physical abilities. “Many things are not just physical existence—creation requires fantasies. For me, the performance inspires in me that artistic creation that involves meditation and imagination,” he said.

According to Shen Yun’s website, “Ideals of loyalty, filial piety, and veneration for the divine are cherished and celebrated.” Such inner meaning was not lost on Mr. Chen.

“The final tenor—I consider his voice very resounding, and his lyrics very excellent, warning us against the pursuit of money, reminding us not to get lost in the pursuit of money and leave the world empty-handed,” he said.

“I think the lyrics contain a profound meaning. Modern people are busy, getting lost in pursuits, as if they were trapped in a game of money, and not aware of their own acts,” he added. “The songs convey to us a deep sense of morality.”

Mrs. Chen also enjoyed the performance. “Shen Yun’s singers are professional, displaying perfect singing skills,” she said. “The dancers’ movements onstage synchronize with the music almost flawlessly. That kind of leap, with the integration of music and how the backdrop scenes flow into it, is what I experienced for the first time—very touching.”

Mrs. Chen concluded by saying that Shen Yun is unparalleled in its excellence. “The overall effort of the performance, with its aesthetic beauty in music, dance, and even its costumes, I think Shen Yun takes the arts to the highest level.”
