NEW YORK—Brooklyn’s Red Hook sits on the water south of Williamsburg and was one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy. Many mom-and-pop stores have not reopened, and the community is still recovering, according to residents and business owners.

As a tradition, firefighters from around the world who came to New York to volunteer during Hurricane Sandy left the shirts off their backs to the Friends of Firefighters. The bunk beds were anonymously donated for volunteers.
