While Samsung led the industry with 43 million smartphones shipped, Apple garnered the most profit with its iPhone 4S continuing to be the single best-selling phone at most carriers. Yet the much awaited release of Samsung’s Galaxy S III could perk up Samsung’s sales significantly.

Of the top ten smartphone companies, only Samsung and Sony experienced sequential growth in shipments over the fourth quarter in 2011. Nokia saw a 40 percent sequential decline in shipments that could even place it behind the ailing RIM. The BlackBerry maker itself had a 20 percent sequential decline.

In the first quarter, Apple had 35 million smartphones shipped, Nokia 11.9 million, RIM 11.1 million, Sony 7 million, Huawei 6.8 million, and ZTE 4.9 million.
