Dr. Vilayanur Ramachandran, a neuroscientist, is known for his work in psychophysics and behavioral neurology. He made some discoveries about visual illusions and phantom limbs (limbs that are missing or amputated but still sensed to exist). He invented a mirror box, which allows patients to put one hand in and creates an illusion that their missing hand is also present, to alleviate the phantom limb pain that some patients feel.
