Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures announced casting selections for Man of Steel, an adaptation of the classic DC Comics character Superman, which is scheduled for release on June 14, 2013.

Man of Steel is director Zack Snyder’s rendition of the Superman legend and will star British actor Henry Cavill as Clark Kent and Amy Adams as his love interest, Lois Lane.

Adams is nearly a household name, having earned three Oscar nominations for Junebug, Doubt, and The Fighter. Cavill is lesser-known, having appeared in The Count of Monte Cristo, Tristan and Isolde and the Showtime series The Tudors. However, the lineup of Hollywood A-list stars associated with the project is long.

Superman’s adoptive parents will be played by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner.

Alongside the superhero will star his Kryptonian enemies—General Zod played by Michael Shannon and Faora played by Antje Traue. Superman’s biological parents will be played by Julia Ormond and Russell Crowe, and Laurence Fishburne will play the role of newspaper editor-in-chief Perry White.

Christopher Nolan, Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, and Deborah Snyder will also participate in the production of the film.

“A lot of people have approached Superman in a lot of different ways. I only know the way that has worked for us that’s what I know how to do,” Christopher Nolan told The Los Angeles Times.

Having Nolan attached to the project lends credibility considering the recent churn of comic adaptations to film—with some succeeding and others flopping. Nolan wrote, produced, and directed last summer’s smash “Inception” as well as the Batman franchise reboot. The sequel in that series, The Dark Knight, has earned over $1 billion, with the third film, The Dark Knight Rises, set for release July 20, 2012.
