Tech giants Google and PayPal have formed a new strategic partnership that will focus on providing consumers with seamless digital commerce solutions. The Sept. 18 announcement noted that the collaboration will transform the way consumers and businesses handle transactions across various platforms and devices.
“Through this partnership, PayPal will use our industry-leading AI to enhance services and security, and we will more deeply integrate PayPal’s innovative payment capabilities for a better experience across Google products and platforms,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, said in a company statement.
“Together with Google, we are leading the way for digital commerce, ensuring greater opportunities for merchants and users worldwide. We are bringing PayPal’s products and services to billions of Google users and redefining what’s possible at global scale,” added Alex Chriss, president and CEO of PayPal.
The joint venture promises to offer agentic shopping and commerce experiences.
According to Mastercard, agentic commerce is the latest form of online and mobile shopping that features an AI agent that completes tasks for a user—such as searching for items, comparing options, and making a purchase. Agentic shopping can be completed with limited or no manual inputs from the consumer.
Mastercard provides an example of how a consumer might use this new technology by asking an AI agent to book a flight to London, after which the agent will not only review airlines and airports, but also identify the best options available.
“Agentic commerce can provide more personalization for users, since these agents can remember your preferences, details, and past purchases,” Mastercard noted on its website. “The agents can also offer greater efficiency and speed, helping a user avoid having to scroll through retail or airline websites, and instead find what they need in a few seconds.”
The announcement by both firms indicates the new Google-PayPal agreement will join PayPal’s global payment infrastructure with Google’s AI expertise. PayPal’s “Hyperwallet” checkout system and PayPal Payout solutions will be integrated with Google products to support seamless digital commerce experiences.
Under the agreement, PayPal Enterprise Payments will act as one of the main payment providers to process credit card payments across products, such as Google Cloud, Google Ads, and Google Play. In addition, PayPal will partner with Google Cloud to enhance its technology foundations and infrastructure to drive PayPal’s next-generation commerce and payments platform.
“These product innovations from PayPal and Google help advance the intelligent agent revolution, equipping consumers, merchants, and developers with flexible tools to engage in the next generation of digital commerce,” the announcement stated.
Headquartered in San Jose, California, PayPal has been offering consumers digital global commerce options for more than 25 years. The company is active in more than 200 markets.
Founded in 1998, Google is now headquartered in Mountain View, California. The world’s most well-known search engine also offers numerous products such as Google Maps, Google Ads, Gmail, Google Play, Google Cloud, Chrome, and YouTube. Google is a subsidiary of Alphabet, Inc.
