Democrats Face Critical Michigan Primary; Trump: Last Chance for Iran to Sign Deal | NTD Good Morning (Aug 4)

Tuesday’s primaries in Michigan are shaping up to be one of the most closely watched races. Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is up against Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.). An Emerson College poll published last week shows El-Sayed leading Stevens. Stevens leads among voters over 60 years old. Whoever wins the Democratic primary will be up against GOP presumptive nominee Mike Rogers.

President Donald Trump told reporters on Aug. 3 that negotiations with Iran are ongoing but warned that it is the “last chance” for Tehran to make a peace deal. Trump told reporters at the White House that Iranian officials called him and asked him not to attack. The pause in strikes came after Gulf allies and Iranian officials had made a request over the weekend, Trump said.

The Senate has taken the first major step toward avoiding another government shutdown later this year. The chamber voted 89–4 to advance a bipartisan stopgap funding bill that would keep the federal government funded through Dec. 11. Senate leaders from both parties say the measure will give lawmakers more time to negotiate full-year spending bills while avoiding another funding lapse.
