Trump Heads to Capitol to Address House GOP; Trump Says Russia and Ukraine to Start Cease-Fire Talks | NTD Good Morning (May 20)

President Donald Trump is heading to Capitol Hill on Tuesday morning to rally support among divided House Republicans for a multi-trillion-dollar budget bill, which he has dubbed a “big, beautiful bill.” Progress on the negotiations has been slow, and it remains uncertain whether the measure has enough backing within the GOP’s narrow House majority. If the bill passes the House, it would then move to the Senate, where Republicans there could begin making their own changes.

Trump made separate phone calls to both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, and said afterward that the two countries have agreed to begin cease-fire negotiations immediately. Russia and Ukraine had held low-level talks in Turkey, but Zelenskyy criticized Putin for not showing up in person. Trump said he does believe that Putin wants an end to the war, adding that their conversation had an excellent tone.

Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) is facing federal charges after allegedly assaulting officers during a protest at a Newark Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility. Meanwhile, the first deportation flight under Trump’s new “Project Homecoming” initiative has landed in Central America. The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the administration to end protections for more than 300,000 Venezuelan nationals in the United States.
