Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Aug. 20 that the United States will impose the “toughest sanctions in history on Iran,” with details to be announced on Monday. He says the measures will target Iran’s ability to generate revenue and support its military and is warning countries and companies that continue trading with Iran that they could also face penalties.
The U.S. military said on Aug. 20 that eight people were killed when a charter plane crashed at a remote military radar site in western Alaska. Officials say the twin-engine Cessna was carrying two pilots and six passengers when it went down on Thursday about 450 miles west of Anchorage. U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis said it was “a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski offered condolences to the victims’ families. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
The Cook Political Report on Aug. 20 moved the Senate races in Texas and Iowa from Lean Republican to Toss Up, its most competitive rating, and shifted both states’ governor’s races in the Democrats’ direction. Democrats will need a net gain of four seats to take control of the upper chamber.
