Former Miami Heat star and NBA Hall of Famer Chris Bosh said he is lucky to be alive after suffering a medical emergency that left him unconscious and covered in his own blood.
In an Instagram video on Feb. 25, the 41-year-old shared details of what he could remember from the health scare that began with a numbing sensation down his left leg.
“So I woke up covered in my own blood,” Bosh said. “It was crazy. It was fast. It was instant. There was no warning, I didn’t have any time to prepare for it.
“I was getting ready to go on a date with my wife and the next thing you know, I was, I was on the ground,” he recounted.
“I won’t get into specifics, but you can kind of see I’m still recovering,” he said as he pointed to dark areas under his eyes. “I’m not gonna try to hide that one in case I look different.”
Bosh, who has a history of blood clots, described having no memory of the ordeal except for waking up, trying to move, and being unable to do so. That’s when his wife, Adrienne Williams Bosh, contacted emergency responders.
“It was a scary thing and it came fast,” Bosh added. “That’s the thing I get from this. Don’t wait to take action because it could come fast, it could come quick. I’m lucky to be alive and I feel great about that. And now I’m thinking about how I live my day-to-day life. That’s really it, but don’t wait.”
He did not reveal the cause of the incident.
Bosh is a two-time NBA champion with the Miami Heat who spent 13 seasons in the league and also played for the Toronto Raptors.
His career was cut short after he was hospitalized for a pulmonary embolism in 2015. He developed reoccurring blood clots the next year, which ultimately led to his premature retirement in 2017.
The 11-time all-star now holds a different perspective on life and wanted to share his experience in hopes of helping others going through similar situations.
“What did change was an immediate outlook on life that was simpler and more honest,” he detailed in a blog post he wrote titled “Return From the Darkness.”
“I stopped paying attention to things outside of myself and started paying attention to the things I had neglected,” he continued. “I began to focus on the passions and people who were already pouring into my life, rather than chasing validation from the unknowns and from those who weren’t reciprocating the same energy I gave them.”
Bosh was the fourth pick in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft and was part of the infamous “Big Three,” the superstar Miami Heat trio which included LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who were also drafted in 2003.
Together, they led the team to four consecutive NBA finals and won back-to-back championships in 2012 and 2013.
