Authorities on Tuesday shared a new video timeline and a clearer image of the suspect in the Brown University shooting, though investigators did not indicate they had moved any closer to knowing the shooter’s identity.
The FBI, in conjunction with the Providence Police Department and Rhode Island State Police, released an updated video timeline following the person of interest’s movements during the Dec. 13 incident.
The video timeline was released after federal authorities on Monday shared photos and video of a suspect in the shooting at the university over the weekend that left two students dead and nine others injured, as a person of interest detained earlier was released without charges.
The FBI described the suspect as a male approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky physique.
In the images, he is wearing a blue-and-gray fleece jacket, dark pants, a dark beanie, and a black facemask. Local police also released footage showing what appears to be the same individual pacing on a sidewalk at the university.
The attack took place in an afternoon classroom where students were getting ready for an economics final.
Investigators said the motive is unknown.
The victims killed were identified as Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an 18-year-old aspiring neurosurgeon from Virginia, and Ella Cook, a 19-year-old from Alabama who was in charge of the university’s campus Republicans chapter.
Umurzokov was helping a friend at the review session. He often helped students who had recently immigrated to the United States, according to his sister, Samira Umurzokova.
Cook was memorialized by the Brown College Republicans as a leader. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and her fellow classmates,” the club’s president, Martin Bertao, said in a post on X. “Our prayers are with her family, our Brown CR’s, and the entirety of the campus as they heal from this tragedy.”
One of the nine wounded remained in critical condition Monday. Seven were critical but stable, and one had been released from the hospital, according to Brown University President Christina Paxson.
A $50,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the suspect’s identification, arrest, and conviction. Officials asked the public to submit tips to 1-800-CALL-FBI or online at tips.fbi.gov, and to share any personal photos or videos from the scene. Tips can be anonymous.
One individual detained Sunday as a person of interest was released due to insufficient evidence, authorities said during a press conference.
Rhode Island Gov. Daniel McKee emphasized the urgency of the investigation.
“We want to see the individual that pulled the trigger on these young kids identified, apprehended, and brought to justice,” McKee said.
President Donald Trump condemned the violence in a statement that also touched on recent attacks in Sydney and Syria, extending sympathies to victims and families.
The suspect is considered armed and dangerous.
Brown University canceled classes on Monday as the investigation continued.
